Not Open to the Public

2016 Juming Museum, New Taipei City, Taiwan.

In an exhibition that is “not open to the public”, what do you expect to peek at? Through the enclosed notice, it unfolds different relationships and diagonals of the exhibition vis-a-vis the artists and the museum, and touches upon the sensitivity of archives.

What does archive mean to us? Why do we so urgently turn memories into recorded archives? Even though they are private and inaccessible, they present themselves as a daily, universal question that you and I are facing together at present. “Contemporariness” will disappear as time goes by; thereby “archive” becomes the only path through which lost reality could be traced.

The thesis of “Not Open to the Public” comes from the artist duo “Working Hard”,  addressing the procedural realization of spacial transformation, following the exhibition project “Certified Copy”. “Working Hard” looks upon archives as a way to record “reality”, seeking other archiving possibilities aside from text, images, digital forms, and then considering the limitations and the variability of archives. “Not Open to the Public” is not an exhibition literally not open to the public, but a description from artists to the exhibition event and the archive status. From calling for applications, delivering applications, to being chosen for 2015 Experimental Sculpture Base Camp of Juming Museum, the whole process took the period of a year. Before attempting to set up a so-called “exhibition”, the artists thought about how to enter and be stationed in the new space and the new environment as motivation to do a series of preparation and preliminary study. Attempting to present the creative content which ferment and expand through time and the paths which would add, close, duplicate, evolve as layers, they touch the construction progress behind the exhibition event. The artists’ observation, record and extraction come together as “archives” of art, revealing the progressiveness and time of constantly writing, generalizing and systematizing of people before pursuing questions of life.
